On 10the September 2026, a group of 50 staff and volunteers from City of Sanctuary Sheffield went to Scarborough for the day on Northern Rail. COSS is an independent charity, working to build a safe and welcoming city for people seeking sanctuary. The organisation has over 100 active volunteers, a large majority of whom have lived experience of the UK asylum system. The summer away day is a staple event on our volunteer calendar, much enjoyed by everyone.
Across two trains, with 25 complementary tickets on each, the group was welcomed by Northern Rail staff, who were all curious and warm towards the group. One onboard train staff asked if they could join our group!
The day was of huge value to COSS as an organisation, an opportunity for volunteers and staff to get together outside of our habitual circumstances, to spend time engaging with each other differently. We spent time on the beach, playing beach games, and some people went in the sea.
As an organisation, COSS would like to thank and congratulate Northern Rail on its commitment to supporting people. Many of our volunteers live in difficult personal circumstances, navigating the asylum system, and this day was a collective sigh of relief – an expression of joy and community that is clearly reflected in the personal sentiments collected below.
