AIA Launches New BAFA Academic Research Grants for 2026
The Association of International Accountants (AIA) has announced a new academic research funding initiative for members of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA), supporting high‑quality research that advances knowledge and strengthens the accountancy and finance profession.
Funded by the AIA Educational & Benevolent Trust (AIA EBT), the programme will provide four academic research grants of £2,500 in 2026. The grants are available to BAFA members and AIA Academic Members and are designed to encourage research that informs professional practice, education and policy, including in areas of sustainability, artificial intelligence, and ethics.
The initiative was formally launched at Ulster University by AIA Chief Executive Philip Turnbull and Professor Joan Ballantine, President of BAFA.
Philip Turnbull said the initiative reflects AIA’s commitment to bridging academic insight with professional relevance:
“Academic research plays a vital role in ensuring the accountancy and finance profession remains informed, resilient and forward‑looking. Through the support of the AIA Educational & Benevolent Trust, we are proud to invest in research that generates evidence‑based thinking and helps address the challenges and opportunities facing our profession.”
Commenting on the announcement, Professor Joan Ballantine, President of BAFA, welcomed the funding and the strengthened partnership between the academic and professional communities:
“These grants provided by the AIA Educational & Benevolent Trust will support meaningful, high‑quality research and enable academics to make a real contribution to professional practice, education and public interest outcomes.”
The AIA Educational & Benevolent Trust has a long‑standing role in supporting education, research and professional development within accountancy and finance. Andrew Lamb, Chair of Trustees, emphasised the strategic importance of investing in academic insight:

The new grants reinforce AIA’s position as a research‑engaged professional body, committed to thought leadership and collaboration with academia.
