It is a heartbreaking reality that so many older adults in our communities’ face loneliness and isolation in later life. Fortunately, there is strong, localized support right here.
At the Hamwattan Centre in Leeds. Collaborating with community volunteers to support older people to get active to experience all the region has to offer the communities team are here to support those who need a little extra help. At Northern Trains Ltd an inspirational member of our Leeds Station Management Javaid Khan is always on hand at Leeds Station to support older people and build stronger, more inclusive community connections all in his own time. As part of Community Rail Week he organised and facilitated a trip to Saltaire for older women form the Hamwattan Centre, but it did not stop there.
He reached out to Saltaire World Heritage Education Association and Saltaire history Club to create a truly interactive experience of our ladies in Saltaire.
Javaid’s action to combat loneliness by bridging the gap of isolation has creating a vital sense of belonging for those who feel disconnected. A simple tip on our trains, cup of tea and a casual chat can make all the difference, proving that small acts of kindness was a powerful tool for meaningful connection with the wider world.

These women who are all key influencers in their community have now kindly offered to become ambassadors for Northern to promote employment and skills opportunities to their wider community networks. So, all can take advantage of the great careers on offer at Northern and the wider region.
