HD Horsemanship: Inclusive Riding Business Saddles Up for Growth with Start Up Loan Support

HD Horsemanship, an inclusive equine learning business founded by Sam Anderson‑Parker in Dorset, is celebrating early success after securing a £5,000 Start Up Loan delivered through GC Business Finance.

Created to support children who often fall between traditional riding provision, HD Horsemanship offers a calm, sensory‑aware environment for young people who are home educated, have special educational needs, or benefit from a flexible, child‑led approach. Sessions focus on confidence building through grooming, sensory activities, quiet time with ponies, and riding when the child is ready. With 1:1 or very small groups, SEND‑aware teaching, and carefully matched horses, the business adapts to a wide range of physical, sensory and emotional needs.

In its early stages, the business faced significant operational challenges, including securing suitable land and navigating a rigorous local authority licensing process. Achieving a four‑star licence was a major milestone, but it also highlighted the need for additional financial support to create a safe, fully equipped environment for families.

The Start Up Loan enabled Sam to invest in essential equipment, strengthen the business model from day one, and acquire the right ponies to deliver therapeutic, inclusive sessions. Since opening in November, HD Horsemanship has grown from four ponies to five and supported up to 40 young people — many of whom have experienced meaningful improvements in confidence, communication and emotional regulation.

Sam credits the personalised support from GC Business Finance as a key part of the business’s early success.

“The support we received went far beyond the funding. The guidance around running the business, particularly on the financial side, gave us confidence and helped us deliver a much higher‑quality service to local families,” she said.

Alex Mearns, Head of Start Up Lending at GC Business Finance, added:

“HD Horsemanship is a fantastic example of a purpose‑led business with a clear social mission. Sam had a strong vision from the outset, and our team worked closely with her to make sure the funding was right for the business.”

With demand for specialist, inclusive services continuing to rise, HD Horsemanship is already planning its next phase of growth. Future ambitions include expanding sessions, creating paid roles alongside volunteers, partnering with local schools, and eventually moving to a larger site to support even more children through the power of equine learning.
